Upgrade Canadian Justice System

I think the law is a wonderful thing that protects our society but is also far too often unfair and illogical in how law is used to shape our lives and this world.  I like many lawyers and judges and court masters that I have met - even after dealing with them.  It is a hard job they do, I just think that in order to keep up with the modern democratic world, the Canadian Justice system needs a major operating system upgrade to better protect the public's legal rights and pocketbooks... We have to be more active to demand what works for better helping the general public, rather than allowing the law society and judges create rules that protect only them, serving to increase legal revenues and their unquestioned powers to do whatever they want - and get away with it - legally.

If you have a problem with lawyers or judges abusing your legal rights or making very questionable decisions against you, you can only complain to their co-professionals (ha, ha good luck with that ) - there is nobody empowered to help the average person.  Doctors, Dentists, Engineers, Nurses, and Teachers can be easily taken to court - but how do you sue a lawyer or judge and get a fair chance at success ?  We all know that lawyers and judges cover for each others to protect their own profession and to milk the public for as much as possible.   What we lack is a way to effectively protect ourselves from being cheated and abused by crafty lawyers and subtly abusive judges.   ( exampleA Canmore Rabbits: Onischuk v Canmore, HMQRA  ABQB 1101-14786   exampleB - more later)

A classic example is the case of Lucy the Elephant in Reece v Edmonton whereby a couple of non-animal friendly (pro-government) judges crafted some legal arguments to (wrongly) give dictatorship style decisions: that absolutely no evidence of defendants can override professional healthcare evidence of qualified veterinarians, and that nobody in the public has any legal rights to challenge any wrong-doings of government and especially for government animal abuses.  When nobody in the public can FAIRLY challenge any government wrongs in Court then we are living in a communist style dictatorship.  One Appeal Judge Ms.Fraser was the solo voice of reason - but without any public mechanism to question, suspend or overturn the decision of the crafty Judges we the public must now live with the self-serving (job security/promotion) legal decisions that are  contrary to the fundamentals of justice ( proof, all equal before law) - and that such wrong decisions then act to spread the damage to cases that cite the two errant judges. other examples can easily be found - but their is no independant agency to track and investigate legal complaints so the total damages are unknown.

For each province, we need to legislate at least one publicly elected Legal Review Board that oversees the law society, law courts and judges. Like a driving license, both lawyers and judges should get demerits for bad behaviour and legal abuses should result in fines, suspensions and if continued then termination. Of course with good behaviour and time those demerits drop off. This would also help the legal review board to balance the law society opinions of who should be promoted to a judge based on actual performance as rated by the people directly affected by their lawyers actions - not just good old boys clubs and political connections.  Let the truly meritorious rise to the top - and stay their only by continued good performance ( just like any other job of employee reviews - welcome to the real world everyone else copes with ).

Lawyers could then also complain to the independent Legal Review Board about bad judges without fear of being cast out of their law society or from being blocked to become a judge someday.  The LRB complaints and demerits assigned to lawyers and judges could also be used to determine which judges deserve to be trusted as appeal court judges and supreme court judges. Everybody wins as the overall system would be fairer and better balanced with honest feedback of the public whom are now far too often, simply victims and sources of revenue for the legal profession.

Complainers would pay the Legal Review Board investigators a modest filing fee ($50) plus an modest hourly investigation fee (about $15/hr) that would be further subsidized by the governments of the province and Canada.  The way it is now, you would have to pay $600 to file an appeal plus $100/hr for courts transcripts, plus all the legal costs and lawyer fees BEFORE the Court of Appeal would even consider to look at your case (which you have to scramble to file an appeal within 20 days - why ? to make you go to a lawyer.  I note that in Canada you do not have a legal right to appeal in statutes - if you miss the appeal filing deadline you have to ask permission (!! not a Charter right!!), that is often refused - why ? also why do we not have the legal charter right to a trial by jury - so judges can fix your case to go the way they want it to, especially when suing government, big corporations, lawyers or any politically connected friends )

There are a lot of fine lawyers and super good judges, and though the work is hard, so are many other jobs and the lawyers and judges do get paid very well.  The independent Legal Review Board would help protect good judges and lawyers and ensure their high standards are met by other lawyers and judges.

It is up to the public to demand a better system and better rules to protect ourselves, our hard earned money, our legal and civil rights of democracy.  People fought and died for thousands of years to make democracy better for us - let's not be lazy and let this slip away to continue an undemocratic, archaic system of law that is far too often an unfair, abusive dictatorship of unquestionable and zero-accountability judges and lawyers  - simply because there is no real world EFFECTIVE feedback mechanism to regulate the legal system.  It really is up to YOU to urge government representatives to get laws passed to better protect the public and to empower an independent Legal Review Board.

PS - I think we need to hire more good judges. For example the Supreme Court of Canada should have four courts - West (BC, AB, SK, MB) Central (ON) East (QB) and Maritimes (PEI, NB, NS, NF-Lab) to deal with all of the cases- not just 10 percent of all the applications they receive from lower Courts. This will ensure the lower Courts are following Canada higher court decisions properly and not playing favorites to governments or big corporations. To better protect the public only the best Judges would be able to qualify for Supreme Court based on their demerits records in lower Courts. Oh yes, by the way, Supreme Court decisions should be first shared among judges to resolve differences in opinion before a judgement is passed - and if the decision is split by one vote, then that has to go back to the drawing board ( a clear majority should always be given ) or must be reviewed after two years to see the impact of the decision.

PPS -  the law courts could save thousands of acres of trees every day and greatly reduce storage space - Provincial and Queens Bench courts should only require one original paper form of court documents and evidence documents that should be electronically scanned by the courts and made available online (see US Federal Courts 1990's ).  All other copies of evidence and often thick books of authorities-case laws should only be filed as PDF format on CDROMs.  On appeal, the Court of Appeal should then automatically receive CDROMs of all scanned Court documents filed at the Queens Bench Court file - thus ensuring accuracy of information and saving everyone from having to reproduce 5 paper copies to the Court of Appeal as well as to each of the Respondants.  Time for all the Canada Law Courts to go enviro-friendly !!

CERN Proton Accelerators - Limits of Ignorance

The single photon interference pattern experiment ( David Deutsch, The Fabric of Reality, Penguin books 1997 - see Timeline by Michael Chrichton p.129,130,495) is known science that space-time foam theory postulates adjacent universes and mutual interaction among similar universes. That experiment lends credence to the theory that every time an accelerator particle is created or destroyed by us, multiple universes will create/destroy particles that interact - and possibly may constructively interfere and may possibly cumulatively converge in our universe, or that we may stimulate a cumulatively destructive event in other similar universes that may have a  "tumbling domino" effect back to our universe ( Quantum Entanglement or simply resonance in a closed energy system as the Deutch experiment implies ). Will we be projecting hazardous event probabilities into other universesScientists just don't know. ( "Privileged Character of 3+1 Space" bottom right graphic of multiple unstable and unknown areas ). One hundred years ago, Einstein was believed to have solved the universe, yet time has shown us greater complexities, and extremely high powered accelerators now tread in deadly areas of ignorance - extreme caution must always be the priority. We should not allow the curiosity or arrogance of present day scientists to make dangerous assumptions "in the name of science" for as the book 101 Theory Drive (Dr. Lynch-brain memory functions) has clearly shown, almost every aspect of scientific community research is tainted by  arrogance and desperate grasping for funding via publication recognition that is dominated by the peer reviews that are controlled by publishers and those established who want to defend outdated ideas mainly to protect their own interests and funding. Tragically, we pay rock stars and athletes far more than most research scientists, MDs and dentists - the key people of society that enable progress for all.   We need to retool scientific research reviews, publication and funding.   I ask Bill and Melinda Gates to start a brain trust award to outshine the Nobel prizes - a $5 Billion "Gates Science Award" endowment fund that would award $200 million per year to the top 100 scientific achievements.  Particle physics science is still in an infancy stage, including theories that will likely be replaced.. Today the causality model with fractal properties is very appealing to me and intuitively sensible as nature simply reuses established principles already observed in nature also noted in Chriton's book Prey" and in Lynch's book as well.  So more efforts should be made to better understand the self organizing, collective emergent intelligent behaviours exhibited in swarms, colonies of the natural world to better understand the causal universe. The causal-fractal universe implies there are a multitude of proximate and sub-fractal structures we may affect without even considering n-dimensional fractal space possibilities or adjacent fractal spaces.  A few years ago, one scientist quoted the odds of the CERN accelerator creating a black hole as one in 50 million - those lottery odds accept that eventually somebody does win.  Who can say whether higher TEV levels will create a stable black hole or a stable hole in space-time here on Earth ?   A massive space hole 1 billion light years across was recently found.  The 1 TEV limit should be maintained until more substantial theories can justify higher energy exploration. Ultra-high powered particle accelerators should be restricted to off-planet research. Scientists should focus on miniaturizing such accelerators for off planet deployment (funding via military weapons research)or finding observable sources in the universe around us. We have one planet - lets not let some over-eager scientists blow it for us all.   ************** Postscript ****************
I think the David Deutsch theory for single photon interference is poorly understood science, yet this simple phenomenon created a half-baked theory from a reputable scientist and authors (Chriton-Deutsch), and has puzzled other scientists for many years.  As I woke 21 July 2012,  I came to realize the single photon experiment simply proves (to me) that light photon particles inherently travels as waves.   Because the distance is so relatively vast from the source to slits to the wall, the photons have time to exert their wave properties. If we were able to use a columinated cohert (laser) light source, perhaps this phenomenon would no longer be observed - providing that the distances were relatively small compared to the light beams modal dispersion that would enable the photon wave function to exert itself.  Note that we could not simply create time sampling intervals to approximate single photons, as doing so would effectively be sampling function of a wave form which would also sample the characteristic photon wave curvature properties ( notwithstanding sampling function shannon-nyquist limits for waveform reconstruction which would likely not apply at a photonic level ). (july 26- found this interesting experiments yet wonder that although we can impose a behavioral mode upon particles (in a causal universe of entanglement) that may not necessarily remove those particles or entangled particles inherent behavioral properties (that eventually emerge) any more than making an atheist go to church or to recant their views of non-heliocentricity). This all tends to reinforce Causal theory of a multitude of fractal universes - which debunk wormholes in space unsupported theory and space-foam multiverse theories of  the respected professor- physicist Wheeler who failed to grasp (or admit) the simple fact that if light cannot escape a black hole that created a wormhole, then how can anything more massive ever escape ? science should not cross-over to realms of voodoo like beliefs which dominant personalities and media enticing pet theories tend to enable unhealthy unrealistic expectations in society. e.g. most people believe space colonization per Star Trek is just around the corner, and so this unrealistic societal belief causes us to be more wasteful and accepting of pollution, species annihilation and environmental degradation.  The truth is that it is going to be many millenia before we get to any life sustaining planet - it will take a long time to terraform Mars to be habitable (not even close to the lush healthy planet we have now - see recent Biosphere experiments failures trying to simulate a closed habitat here on Earth ).   More to my earlier point, if brilliant physicists like Deutsch or Wheeler get so wrapped up in their own media-attention grabbing pet theories (like us all, a human condition) so they cannot see the obvious in a single photon experiment, or wormholes in space, then what lies ahead for more complex experiments in the realm of high-energy accelerator experiments ?  Microsoft with all its vast wealth, time and manpower still cannot build a flawless computer operating system (I calculate that over the past 10 years that Microsoft worldwide has caused the loss of over 100 million hours wasted on "system clock time synchronization errors" blocking operating system updates - just one flaw) - thus my point that i doubt CERN scientists can predict (in self-admitted unpredictable quantum test world) or build software and devices that are 100% flawless to control or deal with each and every unexpected, potentially catastrophic events.  I do not intend to be a fear-monger or Luddite in a windmill,  but I do think that physicists need to proceed with good healthy caution in all potentially dangerous, potentially irreversible experiments.  Quantum Entanglement and particle transporters are the public lure which we all hope works out as scientists want it to, however, some sensible precaution must be taken too ... ***** peace *******  why not spend those billions on solving immedaite world problems like providing clean water and crop seeds for Africa and other poverty areas of the world ? ********  to me a puzzling fact of unexplained science is the phenomenal durability and longevity of photons which having been ejected from distant suns of far galaxies have traveled trillions of miles for millions of years without losing energy or their native base frequency characteristics beyond relativity acceleration effects - really quite stunning when you think of it. i guess space is a near perfect vacuum (so where is all the dark matter concentrated) and photons are so negligible mass and size that there is no appreciable effect even after entering our huge-gap molecules of our atmosphere. perhaps the accelerator can solve those mysteries of the photon..  Perhaps dark-matter is simply the accumulation of ultra-low energy fields of particles that become the graveyard of expended photons and other nearby particles and decaying photons. ** 26 july note:  i also wonder if the quantum time fluctuations observed are analogous to the tectonic plates, except instead of being a birthing ground of continents, we are observing the births of a  multitude of time quanta (time dimension) that is seeping into our universe and by its proximity and relative magnitude to sub-atomic particles, has a large influence that causes weird particle behaviours - including tachyons apparent backward time-travel. I do believe we need to explore quantum space, and the accelerator is a useful tool.  the greatest fear we should have is the excessive number of nuclear weapons awaiting deployment worldwide. as well as species extinction due to massive global warming effects in antarctica and greenland.*****

Alberta Oilsands Pollution Solution

The massive daily pollution occurring at the Athabasca Oilsands can be eliminated by pumping the waste effluent into large holding tanks. After each tank is filled, the oily water is allowed to settle and thus naturally separates into layers - the top being lighter oil, the middle mostly water (routed for further cleaning), and the bottom heavy oils and sand. So once we know how many days it takes to effectively separate components, then we can calculate how many tanks are needed to handle the volume of waste water (currently 12 barrels water used per 1 barrel of oil, only 2/3 recovered). The extracted oil and heavy oil will pay a part of the costs of building tanks and maintaining the clean water recovery.

The purified waste water could be exported to the USA (which usually wants more Canadian water) as industrial grade water, which would reduce the US industrial demands on US public clean water sources, and better protect the pristine Arctic waters.

There is no price too high to conserve the nearby rivers pure water and to preserve and the worlds Oceans and the precious lives therein. I recently watched the Disney movie OCEANS and have to applaud their sponsors and the production crews efforts. They strive to educate the public about the dangers facing all life in our worlds oceans - like the charitable group OCEANA, and Jacques Cousteau family, along with many scientists and worldwide supporters like you.

There are ways to substantially reduce the above ground mining damages too (why not ONLY underground mining ? - next blog). I would personally prefer using low environmental impact oil from the Middle East, but that is risky ocean shipping, and unreliable due to wars of religion and territory. So given how close we are to USA, and the massive Chinese investments in Canada (including NORANDA Mines), we are stuck with Alberta Oilsands which holds about 170 Billion barrels.

So we, the international public, have to pressure the Alberta Govt ( Premier Stelmach and his elected members ) and the Alberta public (including Prime Minister Harper of Calgary, Alberta and all of his Alberta Federal Government politicians ) to all get onboard with passing effective, enforced laws to ensure that big oil profits and wealth is used to quickly fund this easy solution. China now owns majority control of Syncrude, Ontario Teachers Pension funds controls most of SUNCOR's stock. President Obama and American public has a major say too, since the USA is a major importer of oilsands bitumen/oil. So it is really in the hands of international public, not just Alberta/Canada's people and governments to blame. Will you pressure your governments to pressure ours ? Will you pay 5 cents per litre or 25 cents per gallon more for gasoline just to guarantee reducing oilsands pollution ? A small price to pay... a large benefit for future generations and saving other nature lives today.

The fault of need is everyones, so the solution must be too. The first step of responsible, adult behaviour is to eliminate oilsands pollution. Come on everyone, we can solve this !!

California Borrows Election Inventions

After the US national voting fiasco of 2004, my goal was to increase voter participation and empower democracy. In 2004-2008 I contacted the US Govts and the State of Calif about my inventions. I got no replies, but was was protected by a series of evolving applications and patent pending laws.( see www.securevote.biz then search US Patent Office and Canadian Patent Office for Computerized Voting System ). Every document submitted had patent pending info and copyright notices. Refer to wikipedia.org - US Copyright laws and Derivative Works. So I saved Calif. tens of millions of dollars, get my ideas "borrowed", but no fair payment for use of my inventions - patent pending ideas and copyrighted materials. However-I also note that Calif applied one or two of their own new methods. All in all, they did a fabulous job of getting this democracy initiative working for their people - 2 cheers !! Why am I not too put out ? Well, millions of people fought and died in many wars around the world to give us democracy - freedom of choice. The least we could do is to give this some thought and sincere efforts to improve democracy. Possibly more than any nation, this is something that Americans empower very seriously - they back democracy concepts with lives, money and sincere court democracy initiatives reflected in actual practices to voting for judges and leaders at all levels of public government (something we need in Canada ).

I also contacted our Canadian Govt ( Federal, Provincial and Mayors of large cities ) way back in 2004 explaining the concept - I got a few "good idea" comments, but no support (except Halifax, which I was not ready for at the time ). Our Canadian Govts are very happy to keep wasting billions of dollars every election and tolerate low voter turnout because it usually keeps the incumbents in power. I still say that my Vote-By-Mail method we could save taxpayers 80-90% of election costs - I once calculated we could do ALL Elections in Canada (Federal, Provincial, Municipal, School Boards ) for about $60-80 million - compared to over $300 million for just one Federal Election !! visit my website www.securevote.biz
(soon to be mirrored at evote.com.co ). All we need is public pressure to create political will and a few million and we will improve democracy for everyone.

What do I think future democracy may be ? Ideally, TRUE democracy must become proportional representation, whereby each vote does count to elect a proportional number of officials of a political party. This can be done with a flexible number of extra seats allocated to achieve that essential goal. Then every political position of government is then also proportionally distributed - if party X gets 40% of the votes, they should get 40% of elected positions - with all positions (except the leader) being randomly assigned. Who fills the positions are then decided within each political party, the government leadership should be a vote by the public or by all elected officials from all parties to ensure that the best person gets the job to represent the government. That is why I agree that second choice balloting is also a great idea (eg San Francisco Civic Govt).
For the public, this ensures that a sensible consensus and the best people for the jobs are empowered rather than the most dominant personality or a single empowered individual (and their personal biases, corporate loyalties, political or religious opinions).

Each elected official should also have controlling voting rights for the spending of their proportional percentage of the total annual budget - if party X got 40% of the vote, then they should directly control 40% of the annual govt budget. That way each elected official and their political party truly gets a direct say in controlling how the publics money is spent - how much each govt dept and govt programs are supported. This also prevents the tyranny of destitution being used to starve out the losing parties and to punish their supporters - forcing them to become part of the "winning team" no matter how cruel, idiotic and grossly prejudiced their ideas (eg 1930's Nazi Germany).

So TRUE democracy actually encourages true freedom of thought, if I think party X is the best choice, then even if your local candidate does not win, then your vote still helps your political party choice in the larger picture. You are allowed to believe and support what you want to - and thus human innovation and fair questions are empowered. Why must we all be forced to conform to the most recent ideologies currently in vogue or the most successful (best funded) election campaign ? Truly, all advances in every human endeavour arise from innovative thinking that improves upon, or otherwise challenges conventional thoughts and practices. That is essential to the advancement of the human species. The structure of the political process should not impede progress, nor impose psychological constructs of such restrictions upon a truly "free" society.

Our problem in Canada is we are too deeply programmed in our own version of The Matrix (a movie metaphor for us to wake up and look at our societal constructs) to actually realize that we are in a paternalistic society where politics is far too often the tool used to subsidize wealthy corporations ( banks, oil ) rather than providing affordable mortgages (rules & rates) for more people, more quality jobs and industries. Canada donated over 75 BILLION dollars to the big banks last year (they had over 400 Billion in assets). As far as the Law Courts go, it is clear that as long as you are politically connected (cocaine trafficking/possession), or a corporate big-shot, in Canada you are exempt from the written laws (pollution, negligence, public exposure to toxins). Laws are meted out only for we (and wee) common folks of the public (taxpayers, adults, youths, seniors). Far too often our media system carefully redirects attention elsewhere and avoids pressing the fact those white-collar criminals get off totally free. This garbage goes on in most professions too, as long as you are politically connected, you can be the devil incarnate and get away with it. Complaints against politically appointed members of professional boards (and public utilities) are buried, downplayed and fall upon deaf ears. So I really think we do need to empower the public more to be able to elect members for an overseer board, to watchdog the Canadian & Provincial Law Courts which enjoys unquestioned, uncontrolled private abuses of power. We need regional/provincial overseer boards to enable professionals to have a empowered third party, outside politics, that will act in the best interests of the public and the professionals who work well to serve us all. We should not tolerate allowing undeserving people getting ahead, abusing or wasting a job space that other hardworking, honest decent people are denied - or- subject to unreasonable silence on issues or abuses of governing members power to revoke their licenses.
Give professionals an external mechanism to effect control on their professional governance. Give people the democratic right to select people to review and police our justice system outside of the hands of politicians and big business lobbyists.

People died horribly in many wars to create democratic societies and Freedom of Choice ( good song by DEVO-early 1980's ). So the least WE can do in our relatively peaceful, comfortable world of today is to honour their efforts, complete their mission to diligently improve democracy - for everyone's sake.

500 Rabbits Wrongly Killed by Edmonton Humane Society Negligences

In the early spring of 2010 we all learned from local media reports of Ms.Zenner, a middle-aged lady in Edmonton, Alberta had about 500 rabbits taken from her Edmonton home. As a rabbit owner for over 20 years, I was naturally concerned and took a look into the issue after my near-pneumonia cold/flu had subsided. What I found was a horrifying manipulation of the public by the local media - a propaganda system of misinformation, emotional attacks and false perceptions created for society minds, then injected by the local media - similar to the movie, The Matrix.

A few weeks ago I spoke to the lady accused of hoarding and abusing these rabbits. It was very clear to me that this was a very sensitive person who loved nature, rescued and nursed any injured birds or animals. She was clearly heartbroken about losing all her "family" of bunnies, and as she brought out her photo album of them lounging about in her once-beautiful home, she told me about some of her favorite times, like apple nights where they all gathered around her to get extra treats. The rabbits came in when called after roaming daily in her fenced backyard.

If you looked at the complaint video online that showed them in her backyard, it was apparent the rabbits seen outdoors were fat, healthy and stress-free as show by their relaxed postures. If you look at the video, there are some plump rabbits relaxing and hopping about large patches of grass still there - hardly the sign of totally starving rabbits... This apparently escaped the local medias notice. When I spoke with her, I learned that she gave up her beautiful home and paychecks to ensure they had shelter, food, and proper vet care. She quickly gave her vets name, and recounted a tale of how city police had previously kindly helped her catch some stray rabbits that got into a neighbours yard. So even the police new of this situation....but did not think it was so bad that it was a serious problem.

What the media did not report, which I learned of through talking to the person, was that for several years, Ms Zenner had been rescuing tame house rabbits left outside to survive Edmonton, Alberta's harsh winter climate where temperatures nightly can plummet to -20C to -30C for many months - far too harsh for most domestic rabbits to endure. So why did the the local media has made sure this tragedy is being blamed on the wrong party ? Why was she being vilified by the local media rather than portrayed as a kind and caring person, left with the burden of doing too much on her own ?

The news reports say that the local Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) were aware of her rabbit population for several years, but fails to ask the questions like then why did they not work with her to (a) spay and neuter her rabbits (b) help her to rescue and shelter (i) her rabbits (ii) other abandoned rabbits (c) learn where they were coming from ( re: 45 starving rabbits found elsewhere in Edmonton on an abandoned bus Dec. 2009 ).

All the media failed to consider that rabbits multiply quickly - if you start with just 6 rabbits ( 3male, 3 female) you can easily have 8 rabbits per litter, every 2 months ! Do the math and you find that you can very quickly get 500 rabbits in less than a year - especially when one spaying costs about $300.00. But it is not just the cost - almost every rabbit info writes that rabbits become sexually mature in 6 months, when in fact I know they can mature as early as 3-4 months, but they cannot be safely spayed/neutered (anaesthesia sensitivity, organ size) without killing them until they are about 10-12 months old.

So what drove the personal attacks of local reporters ? The Edmonton Journal took "the high road", only quoting a local nurse as saying the young-lady was mentally ill as she was hoarding rabbits. Yet the person quoted was a nurse, not a fully trained psychologist ( whom should have an appreciation for animals ). Even if this were true, I think Ms Zenner rightly feared the EHS (a killing "shelter") would simply slaughter her beloved rabbit pets that she rescued, cared for, and shared her home with. Would you easily hand over your favorite pet(s) knowing they were going to be killed or would you work hard to save them until a better solution could be found ?

So what do we accuse people of when they collect dead things, like coins, books, antiques, or live things like tulip bulbs, etc? Are they automatically branded as mentally ill hoarders ? So what about hunters with wall mounted trophies of their kills ?

The most vicious attacks were from reporters of the Edmonton Sun, who apparently took great delight in quoting disgruntled neighbours calling the rescuer weird, sick, etc. I would normally applaud hostile reporting of animal abuses (like the Sun reporters earlier writings on the abandoned horses near Edson, which probably sensitized them to over-react ). However, in this case it was clear that the Edmonton Sun was far more interested in portraying the rescuer to be a horrible person, and sensationalizing the event so as to sell more newspapers.

Clearly it was all about selling newspapers, and nothing sells like tales of tragedy and horrific villains like Ms. Zenner, who was months later, still too heart-broken, too sick and tired to talk without crying or able to properly defend herself from the media wolves.

I contrast Ms Zenner's shabby treatment by the media with an article I have (but cannot publish) from about 10 years ago (Aug.2000) from the Victoria Times-Colonist that praised the heroic efforts of Erin Quinney of Sooke, BC who had saved over 300 rabbits from execution due to a negative, erroneous media campaign by a local hospital. She cared for all 300 rabbits and many other animals for about 10 years until the day she died in spring of 2009. The media and public mostly forgot her, and forgot to continue to support her efforts - but at least they fairly recognized what she did was caring and humane. She was not vilified by the press, nor falsely accused of being mentally ill or hoarding.

So was it necessary to kill all this rabbits ? The local EHS said they were all sick with a disease called snuffles, which is contagious and can kill rabbits if severe enough. However, snuffles can be easily misdiagnosed as a reaction to dust, hair/fur, cold weather, diet, etc. Many rabbits also happily live for many years with pasteurella infections that give runny noses, eye discharges too. Unless you area very experienced rabbit vet, you could make an extremist misdiagnosis. It appears to me this was an "easy way out" solution to save money rather than provide humane long term care for all of the rabbits.

The local media carefully avoided mentioning that over the past few years, the EHS foolishly spent about $15 million dollars on a fancy new building - instead of focusing on providing spay/neuter and rescue efforts. True, the new shelter was needed as the old EHS centre was scheduled to become a freeway off ramp. However, $15 million seems like a creating a showcase than actual vital operations support and a simple cost effective building.

I think this was a carefully constructed series of lies to the media and public to avoid the costs of sheltering and caring for the rescued rabbits, so that more money could be spent on selling marketable cats, dogs, and to pay the heating and property taxes on that fancy new building. The cheapskate City of Edmonton that evicted the EHS from their old location, then charged the EHS over $12,000 to install a bus stop (rather than donating it). I also know that the rabbits were not favorites of one EHS director (new building fund-raiser), who had me removed many times for complaining about the summer heat (only their staff had a fan) and lack of water in the rabbits cages at the old EHS shelter. I also wrote a few times to say they should focus more on providing animal spay-neuters, and should save money to do so with just a simple new shelter building. The best SPCA I have seen is the Victoria, BC SPCA which has a large room where rabbits have large, common area to hop around and interact with kids and adults ! The Edmonton SPCA keeps them in tiny cages with minimal public interaction, and very little healthy, vital exercise.

I remember how hard Erin Quinney had worked for over a decade to care for all the animals she had in her care - she died in poverty a few months after her companion Troy Liard had died. Society had forgotten her - the latest game scores and corporate dealings were far more important to the world than somebody who loved and cared for other living beings with everything she had, everyday.

In Edmonton, the local media has ensured the EHS gets away with gross negligence in their mandate to allow this to occur, and instead the true care-giver is setup to take the blame by the Courts for doing what the EHS should have done all along. Yet, was the EHS itself overwhelmed / under-budgeted ? First 45 rabbits in Dec.2009 then the 2 separate, horrific tragedies of abandoned horses and other animals around Edson, Alberta in Feb.2010 . This follows the tragic horse abuses around Andrew, Alberta of summer 2008 right under the nose of Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach whose nearby family farm operated for about 100 years.

So why has the Alberta Govt been so slow to take action to better protect animals, regulate animal breeder licensing, and to better support the Calgary SPCA, Edmonton EHS, and other groups ? The Alberta Govt apparently did not make any donation to the new EHS building according to the lack of an Alberta Govt plaque on the EHS shelters donation wall. Alberta Govt has given millions and billions of dollars to highly profitable oil companies over the past decade, but apparently nothing for Animal Humane Societies.

For those of you reading this, please consider that the vast majority of people in Alberta love animals and nature. We just have a few uncaring red-neck morons who are truly mentally ill, because like a robot they have no feelings of concern or compassion for other living things, but they are not properly diagnosed or branded by the media like Ms. Zenner, one truly dedicated rabbit friend, rescuer and caregiver of Edmonton.

The Edmonton Sun even got another local rabbit rescuer I know of to boost sales of the Sun newspaper by posing for a front-page picture to boost paper sales in return for flattery coverage of their great past rescue efforts ( which they abandoned to me a year ago - www.hoppyendings.com after giving us Nutmeg, apparently a very sick rabbit without telling us. Nutmeg later died ). However, the infection was hard to detect, and I really cannot blame them. Those inaugural members of hoppyendings did tremendous tasks of love and caring, spending hundreds of hours a week and thousands of dollars to rescue rabbits - they should only get love and respect, some well deserved media attention, and some public appreciation. THANK YOU Leslie, Brian & Loni for being unsung heroes - unlike Ms Zenner, without the negativity attacks Ms Zenner suffered for doing what you did and more. So it seems that it all really comes done to how the media portrays your efforts (unless your the one being rescued, who cares? ). I guess time and heavens final judgement will tell. But like so many other instances, we get media trained to damage or destroy truly good efforts, or by our collective/media silence, allow good people to be denied fair justice, to be cheated or abused, or simply ignored.

If we cared more about people in need, and spent less subsidizing wealthy banks and corporations, or futile time-wasting (overpaid) pro-sports (eg multi-billion dollar Olympics), then we could all spend that time and money actually solving local, regional and world problems. Maybe then nature and those who care about God's gifts of living things, would have a better chance of long term successes. We all must realize that this is our one chance to create a true Heaven on Earth - why else would we be given the gift of knowledge ? We simply lack coordinated messages of guidance - which needs to start with the Churches of this world. People need learn that we have a duty of care for all living things, and that other living things do have souls, and we only destroy ourselves/our souls by denying these facts so obvious to anyone who has had a pet of any kind. Thanks to the media, EHS, et al Ms. Zenner has lost 500 loving friends. How would you like it if the EHS dragged all your pets away and asphyxiated them - that is the legacy of horror left for Ms Zenner to relive the rest of her life - in addition to the public scorn and derision created by some of the uncaring local media. Already she has been given a life sentence of humliation and horrible memories for her valiant efforts.

Solutions for BP Oil Spill - US South Coast

Here are faxes I sent in early June 2010 to the BP spill suggestion website and to US President Obama.  http://www.parkfoto.com/blogfiles/bpspillsolutions.pdf   I felt I had to do something since BP was not solving the issue fast enough according to all the news reports at that time.

They have implemented part 1 for pipe collection chimney, and I think they should use part  2 to cap it. For part 2 ( a weighted, giant hypodermic filled with sealant activated by saltwater/oil - eg drainpipe RTV sealant or even PL2000 sealant that is water cured and you can buy at any hardware store ). I would add equipment to level the device (use seawater to inflate/deflate leg pistons) and extra big landing pads (like lunar module of 1970s) to keep it from sinking into the mud. The top weight should be suspended from above by extending the support bars above the weight so that the top weight can hang from a chain and the explosive bolt can be moved to the top to prevent jamming ).

I think a majority of the fines arising from the spill  should be donated for wildlife rehabilitation costs and  also donated to wildlife protection groups like World Wildlife Fund,  International  Federation for Animal Welfare and World Society for  Protection of Animals.

Saskatchewan Coyote Bounty Increases Poisoning Chemicals

In late 2009, the Saskatchewan (Canada) Government allowed bounty killing of thousands of coyotes - recently announcing that well over 7,000 have already been killed. The Sask. government fails to recognize that coyotes naturally control populations of other wildlife that farmers call pests ( deer, gophers, mice, voles, grasshoppers, wild rabbits, birds etc. ).

Sask. Govt wholesale slaughter of coyotes is a horrible method to increase sales of toxic chemical poisons that will harm other wildlife (wild predatory birds ) that feed on poisoning victims - creating a huge spectrum of natural predator victims ( and poison-carrying carrion feeders - animals, insects, birds ) and increased toxic chemicals in our environment (plants, soil and our shared water).

Maybe farmers should consider natural predators as friends. Cattle farmers could spend more time properly patrolling their herds, keeping them together and bringing them in more often. Governments could instead help to create jobs for today's new-age cowboys.  Let coyotes and wolves survive for natural predator-prey relations control wildlife populations - without uncontrollable harmful side-effects of poisonings.
